Facebook partnered with us at the start of this year to find women who could join their ranks in Dubai and Singapore for a 6 month 'Career Comeback' scheme.
For those of you not familiar with the concept, we run initiatives with multinationals like Facebook, Kantar, British High Commission and Mastercard to help women who've take a career break for any reason to return to the workforce. Here's the story of one of our successes so far, Producer Syafiqah, in Singapore and if you're interested in taking part in a future opportunity, just sign up and we'll be in touch!
Hopscotch: Tell us a bit about your background, both family and career-wise.
Syafiqah: I graduated with a degree in journalism back in 2011 and embarked on a career in broadcast television. To date I have produced, written and directed myriad shows spanning current affairs, history, wildlife and reality for various international broadcasters such as National Geographic, Discovery Channel, HBO and Channel NewsAsia. It was a whirlwind career which consisted of lots of adrenaline and long hours! In December 2018, I got married and decided to make a career switch and joined the world of advertising.
H: What has your career so far been like – what challenges did you face?
S: My career so far has been exciting and challenging. Things move really fast in the media industry, so we constantly have to keep up while being creative. It's also a very male-dominated industry so you really have to prove your worth and command attention in the field.
H: What was your reason for leaving the workplace and why did you decide to return?
S: I had gone freelance as a producer in 2017 and took a short break from taking on television gigs in 2018 to focus more on my social enterprise start up, 'Sonder Social' (www.sondersocial.com) At that time, the start up required my full attention so I committed my time to it. In early 2019, I decided to return to the workforce and decided on a career switch, moving away from traditional television to a more digital role as I wanted to explore a new landscape and gain more skills.
H: Tell us about your journey with Hopscotch – how did we help?
S; I first saw the role on Hopscotch’s Instagram account and I then read up about Hopscotch and felt that the company's mission to help women back to work was really empowering. I got in touch with Pearlie in the Hopscotch Singapore office and she informed me of the role at Facebook. It was an very exciting role and I wanted a foot into the Tech world. Pearlie encouraged me to go for it.
H: What’s your role like now and what are your hopes for the future?
S: I am currently APAC Producer with Facebook Creative Shop and I manage advertising campaigns for Facebook and Instagram. Its been a steep learning curve as television and digital advertising is different so I've had a great crash course whilst being here. Moving forward, I want to continuously develop my skills in the digital advertising space.
H: Finally, do you have one piece of advice for others currently looking for work?
S: Trust your gut and aim high! But never undercut yourself and get out early if the environment is toxic for women/working moms.
