Hopscotch Hotshots: October
With flexible work and women as our only 'niche', we're glad to say that our community is home to a wealth of diverse talent from all kinds of industries. Some have been out of work for some time and a skills or networking boost, whilst others are simply looking for a better work life balance and come to us to shift to a new role. Either way, we're proud to represent such an impressive breadth of candidates...and occasionally to shout about them, too!
This month, our Hotshot is Rochelle - an ex-advertising industry professional who came to us looking for a new path after the birth of her daughter, Ava. Here's her story!
"Hi, I'm Rochelle and have been living in the UAE for the past 5 years. I started my career as a HR Professional in the financial capital of India - Mumbai. I am passionate about what I do and am especially interested in the area of Learning & Development and Psychometric Testing. I married my Prince Charming in 2011, and in not-so-typical fairy tale fashion, he brought me here to Dubai. After 3 years of working in HR in Dubai, I traded in my 9-6 role for a 24/7 one - taking care of our 1-year old daughter, Ava - a very fulfilling career move and one that allowed me to be around for her formative years.
When Ava was about 2.5 years old and ready to start nursery, I decided it was time to get back to the workforce. To be honest it was not very difficult finding a job. I had just floated my CV and within a few days I received a call from Hopscotch for a temporary role. I was very excited about it - a temporary role was the perfect segway for me to get back to work - it would allow me flexibility and give Ava a chance to get accustomed to the change as well.
Along with doing all the basic work of scheduling the interview etc, Hopscotch did an amazing job of negotiating the contract. It was a 3 month contract with working hours from 9am to 4pm which is brilliant because I am home at an earthly hour and can actually spend time with Ava instead of just coming home and putting her to bed! A few good tips from the recruiter (who is a mum of 2) put my fears to rest about keeping my daughter at nursery and I started my new job with anxious excitement.
My 3 month contract got extended and I have been working here for 8 months now. Since the role was new to me, I had a brief training period at the beginning to get acquainted with the work. I now have additional skill sets which I am sure will help me in the future in any job. It feels good to be financially independent and spend time with your family. I never thought I would have the best of both worlds but now I do.
If I were to give some advice to other women out there, I would say be open to anything that comes your way; don't turn down an offer just because it’s not in your area of expertise. Think of it as a learning experience and get out of your comfort zone. If it doesn't work out, it’s cool. At least you tried. If it does work, you have one more feather in your cap!".
