How to make your Career Comeback

6 minute read.  So, you’ve left work for a few months or years to have a family and now you’re looking to get back into the workforce. It can be nerve-wracking; everything seems different and you just don’t know how you’ll cope with all the changes and a family! At Hopscotch, we believe in helping empower women and find opportunities for all women; irrespective of the industry you work in, the employment hours you are seeking or the ‘gap’ in your CV. We’ve put together a list of things to do when starting the search for a job and how to go about it the best way. 

1. Believe in yourself!


As silly as it sounds, your first step to getting back into the workforce is being confident in yourself! Often after having a family and taking a break, you can feel worried to come back to the workforce as you are no longer sure of yourself and how well you will be able to manage all your responsibilities and adapt to the changes in your industry since you left. 

2.  Figure out what type of Employment you are looking for

You need to ask yourself; are you ready to go back to work full-time or do you need something part-time? Have you decided to change your career path? There are many instances where women decide to change their profession after kids; women that were once full-time accountants decide they would rather be a home-based pastry chef, which makes it important to be sure which direction you want to take your career in.

3. Work on your CV 

This one seems a little obvious, right? It’s essential to ensure that your CV is up to date and looks the part! It’s always helpful to do a little bit of research on what is imperative to put into your CV. Remember to always tailor-make your CV for the job that you’re applying to. Employers and recruiters aren’t always interested in all your previous positions, they want to see your experience which is relevant to the position you are applying for. 

4. Update your LinkedIn Account

Your LinkedIn account is so important! A lot of people give it a miss, but you have to remember that it is your complete profile online; it allows you to create a persona and showcase what you are all about. Remember how we said; you need to tailor make your CV to only include relevant experience to the role you are applying for? Well your LinkedIn profile will be able to include all your experience; you can even include all your voluntary experience. Try to keep this profile up to date and as professional as possible, it’s not Facebook, so stray away from posting any personal updates or posts that do not seem relevant to your professional aspirations! The most important aspect of your profile will be to have a professional profile picture (no selfies please!) and a professional header. LinkedIn will give you lots of tips and tricks along the way when you are creating your profile!

5. Start your Job Search Online

Once you’ve created the right CV and LinkedIn profile, it’s time to start searching for job opportunities! 6. Network, Network, Network!

It’s always good to follow-up the job search by networking as much as possible! There are various ways to Network; you can network digitally on LinkedIn, or in person at Networking events such as those we have listed here. Build meaningful relationships through these means as you never know who you will meet and what opportunities it will introduce you to!

7. Learn more qualifications

It’s always great to keep adding to your qualifications! Use any free time you have to keep learning and making yourself standout like the superstar you are! LinkedIn Learning has access to a variety of courses and videos which are added as certifications to your profile automatically once completed! There are other free courses available online depending on what you want to study; i.e Hubspot Inbound Marketing and Open2Study

8. Build Relationships

This is the final and most vital step; try to build a strong relationship with key personnel in your Dream company. You need to do whatever you can to network and connect with professionals to get your profile in front of the right people. On average recruiters can get around 500 to 1000 applications per job post; and majority don’t even get contacted; which is why building a strong relationship on a friendly basis can help boost your profile to the top of the pile! Our advice would be to keep it short, sweet and to the point; try to stand out from the crowd. Remember not to over contact them as that can come across as unprofessional.
